DEATH CERTIFICAE OF MARY JANE MOTTERSHEAD/GLOVER/WOODS

On 14 December 1938 Mary Jane Woods, a widow, of 318 Draper Street Cairns aged 74 years died of Bronchopneumonia, Influenza and Senility. She was attended by A.M. Langan and was seen the day of her death. Her father was William Motteshead a labourer. Her mother was Jane formerly Gibson. The certificate and description given by W. Paterson the Son-in-law of 316 Draper Street Cairns.

Mary Jane’s death was registered in Cairns on 16 December 1938. She was buried on the 14th December 1938 (the day she died) at the Cairns Cemetery by H.S. Svendsen Pty. Ltd. Per E.M. Svendsen. The minister from the Salvation Army was Francis V. Jennings and the witnesses were F. O’Brien and J. Paterson. Mary Jane was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England and spent over 50 years in Queensland. She was married in Charters Towers and then in Cairns. Her first marriage to James Glover was for 17 years and the second to Arthur Archibald Woods for 58 years. Surviving children were from her first marriage – Ethel 33, Sydney 40, Henry 50 and Leonard 52. From that marriage 8 males and 1 female are deceased.

DEATH CERTIFICATE OF WILLIAM MOTTERSHEAD FATHER OF MARY JANE

6TH August 1903 in the Kennedy Hospital Bowen, William Mottershead died aged 68 years 8 months and 22 days. He died of a stroke and pneumonia which lasted 6 weeks. His father was John Mottershead who was a brewer and his mother was Mary Baits. His daughter, Sarah Ann Wheelhouse of Dalrymple Street Bowen was the informant.

The registrar was O’Dowhue. William was buried on the 6th August 1903 at the Bowen Cemetery with the rites of the Church of England. He was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England and lived in Queensland for 38 years. He was married to Jane Gibson, in Manchester, Lancashire, England when he was 19 years old.  They had 9 children. Living- Mary Jane 45, Sarah Ann 41, Harriet 31, William 29 with 4 males and 1 female deceased.

From the information contained in the Death Certificates as well as the Birth Certificate of Mary Jane it can be deduced that the family arrived from Manchester around 1867 when Mary Jane was about nine years old.
